Czech Republic Flag: History and Significance

Origin of the Czech Flag

The flag of the Czech Republic, also known as the "Státní vlajka České republiky," originates from the former Czechoslovakia. The country of Czechoslovakia existed from 1918 to 1993, and its flag featured a white stripe over a red stripe, with a blue triangle on the hoist side.

Adoption of the Czech Flag

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia adopted separate flags. The Czech Republic maintained the same design as the Czechoslovak flag, with some slight adjustments. The width-to-length ratio was changed from 1:2 to 2:3, and the blue triangle was slightly enlarged.

Symbolism of the Flag

The colors and design of the Czech flag have symbolic meanings. The white stripe represents purity, peace, and the snow-capped mountains of the country. The red stripe symbolizes courage, determination, and the blood shed in wars for independence. The blue triangle represents loyalty, vigilance, and the skies above the country.
